Paper Recovery and Reducing Returns

The BIEC facilitates communication between various sectors of the book industry seeking to develop new partnerships focused on reducing returns, increasing paper recovery, and all related impacts of a book’s end-of-life.  More specifically, BIEC objectives include:

• Reducing the number of books that are overproduced and returned to publishers from retailers

• Reducing the number of books that end up in landfills by increasing the number of books that are recovered and recycled or reused.

The BIEC offers a forum for key stakeholders to identify opportunities to reduce returns and increase recycling, recovery, and reuse of books.  The group regularly explores and monitors waste streams, alternative recovery models, and educational initiatives aimed to reduce landfill impacts and increase the availability of valuable, clean recycled fiber.
