The BIEC participates in informational forums; conducts webinars; and engages with a variety of ENGO’s, manufacturers, trade associations, government entities, and certification organizations to educate members and exchange information concerning resource use and sustainability in book production.
In 2008 the BIEC approved a proposal supporting a goal of 20% reduction in U.S. book industry greenhouse gas emission by 2020 from a 2006 baseline, with the intent of reducing emissions by 80% by 2050. It is estimated that the initial goal of reducing emission by 20% was achieved by 2012.
Shortly after this goal was established, the BIEC created the guides below to help publishers, printers and paper manufactures minimize their carbon footprint.
